But what do I wear?
I know I know...you're freaking out about what to wear to your shoot. I get it! I've been in your position and it's incredibly overwhelming. You want to look and FEEL your best and with some guidance and planning you're going to do just that! Here are my top tips for figuring out what to wear to your brand photoshoot:
1.KNOW your brand
The outfits you choose for your brand session can totally help tell the story of your brand. What story is it telling? Are you a classy and high-end interior designer? A personable and quirky photographer? A confident and charismatic nutrition and fitness coach? Your clothes can help communicate that!
For example, a black blazer with traditional structure says sophisticated and professional, but a colorful, patterned blazer may say something completely different (like, ‘works hard, plays harder,’ ya feel me?). Both are great, it simply depends on what you're trying to communicate about yourself and your brand!
2.choose your colors wisely
You want to make sure the colors in what both your outfits and your props should definitely compliment vs. clash! You definitely don't want to be matchy match. However, you'll likely be using these for your website and socials so you don't want anything to completely stand out from the rest. For example, if you want a soft and airy looking feed, that hot little pink dress you feel great in might not be the best choice for this occasion.
This is a great time to choose clothes that fit your brand colors. It can reinforce consistency in your brand by visual representation. If you don't love the brand colors on YOU, still make sure they are as complimentary as possible. This will ensure that when you go to build your website or socials, everything looks cohesive.
3.Flatter yourself
We all have things on our bod we aren't super confident in showing off (I feel you!) I am very good emphasizing your best features through the camera and you can bet your bottom dollar that I will do just that. Still, your clothing choices can help tremendously!
For example, if you feel self conscious about your arms choose something with cute sleeves instead of baring them in a strappy top. If you're proud of those strong legs you've worked so hard for in the gym, show them off in a short and sassy skirt! Clothes should fit well and make you feel your best!
Along with this, you may not think your undergarments matter much, but you'll hate if you get the photos back and can see your undies cutting in or a bra strap sticking out! Choose your intimates wisely and well-fitting.
4.take note of the season
It would be pretty silly if you made a post about your big summer sale, wearing a fuzzy sweater and beanie, right?! There are a few options for making sure your images always fit the season you're using them in:
Option one, keep your outfits seasonally neutral (as much as possible) to avoid your photos looking dated as soon as fall comes around. Or, the second and more common option, plan to book at least two shoots a year to always keep your content looking current. If you live somewhere with all 4 seasons this works out really well!
5.wear "your" colors
I know, I know...I just told you to compliment your brand colors and you can still do that! I f you're a neutral girly though and as soon as you pop on the color tan you get washed out, that's not going to be a good look.
I'll say again, matchy-matchy is NOT the answer. You likely have a number of colors that truly fit your brand, and the general temperature of that pallette can always be expanded on. If you feel clueless, consider getting your colors done. I haven't done this yet but have been ITCHING to!
If you don't have time or budget to get your colors done before your shoot, just play around. Snag all of the colors you can find from your closet and hold them up to your face. Does purple make your brown eyes seem deeper and bigger? Does blue make your smile shine even brighter? Does black always get your friends saying "DAMN, you look great!". Do this in neutral lighting and don't be afraid to ask a friend for input.
6.schedule your beauty appointments
Raise your hand if you feel way better with a fresh hilight, mani, and a bit of botox? (Raising my own hand over here...)
I know you're sick of me saying this but you want to FEEL your best during the shoot. Not only will this help you exude confidence that will totally come through in your photos, but it will help the whole day go smoother. We don't want to spend your precious shoot time having to hide your chipped nail polish or have limited hair style options because you need your roots done. Most of all, when you look back at the photos you'd hate to say "dangit my botox appointment was the next week!"
I feel very strongly that you're beautiful in your most natural form and in the way that is true to yourself. Still, the aesthetic choices you make on the regular should be scheduled accordingly for your shoot.
7.Ask the professional
Still feeling overwhelmed with the idea of choosing what to wear? Lots of boutiques will do personal styling which can be a huge help. Additionally, your photographer will have great insight on what would look best to reach the goals your shoot. Don't forget to have options and ask them for advice!
