But what do I do with my hands?
I literally hear these words at every single photo shoot. In fact, I've said them myself when I've been in front of the lens! Props are needed at your session not just to give you something to do, but to help add some character into your brand. Every session will have different props of course that relate to their personal brand, but there are a few that I ALWAYS tell my clients to bring. These props work with everyone, regardless of the details.
Oh, and if you're feeling a bit "basic" thinking you're copying what others have done before, you couldn't be more wrong! These are go to tools that I can use to draw inspiration from and use alongside everything else you bring to your shoot in your shoot.
1.Coffee/tea/water
If you're not a coffee drinker, we can't get along. KIDDING! I don't understand it but I do applaud you.
This is my favorite prop. This can be a to-go cup from your favorite coffee shop (grab your favorite baked good while you're there!) your favorite mug or one with your logo on it. Tea bags, along with the cup, are a great prop too if that's your thing!
2.Phone
I'm willing to bet you do a lot of your work on your phone. From posting to Instagram to keeping up with emails and of course, client texts, it's always on us. Even if it's not huge in your biz, you likely spend some of your day scrolling the socials, taking pictures of your cute kid, or texting your pals. As much as I'd like to get on my soapbox about the downfalls of modern day cell-phone-attachment, it's a big part of our lives.
To show what you do every day, it only makes sense to include it!
3.laptop
For most of my clients this is where ALL the work happens! We can even stop by your office to get a shot on your big computer if that's your vibe, or the coffee shop where you regularly work.
4.byob
If you love to enjoy a glass of Pinot or a Frozen Margarita after a long day's work, show that to your clients! Clients love to see your personality which includes your favorite things. What better way to celebrate your brand than than a mid-shoot cheers to yourself?

5.FAVORITE SNACK
Are you obsessed with Fair Life protein shakes (like me), Skinny Pop (like me...again) or Crumbl Cookies (like...ME)?! You'd be surprised how much of a connection you can make with a good snack hack. Bring those for content and for a mid-shoot pick me up!
6.NOTEBOOK/PLANNER/BOOK
Keep giving clients an insight to your workflow by taking notes or lining up your calendar on paper. Or, bring your favorite Colleen Hoover book to show how you unwind.
7.Glasses/sunglasses
This is a great thing to "do with your hands" and can quickly make you feel more comfy in front of the camera!
8.Hat
Can you tell I'm a fan of accessories? Baseball cap, sun hat, or cowboy hat...they each tell a lot about a person! Not to mention it gives you another thing you can do with your hands.
9.purse/backpack
My favorite accessory of all. You probably walk around with some sort of bag every day and we want to see you in your element!
10.other people
This is a great way to give more "behind the scenes" shots. Incorporate your kids, partner, gal pals, clients and customers to give a full picture of who your brand is and what goes behind it.
